How forgiveness is demonstrated through Tala
Is the Filipino girl Eddie was responsible for killing. Meeting Tala allows Eddie to forgive himself for doing the one thing that has haunted him his whole life, meaning he can finally let go.
Quotes to support argument are:
“You burn me," she said. Eddie felt his jaw tighten. “What did you say?" "You burn me. You make me fire." Her voice was flat, like a child reciting a lesson. "My Ina say to wait inside the nipa. My Ina say to hide." Eddie lowered his voice, his words slow and deliberate. "What...were you hiding from? Little girl?" She fingered the pipe cleaner dog, and then dipped it in the water. "Sundalong," she said. "Sundalong?"She looked up. "Soldier."(187)
~Eddie first realizes what he has done to this little girl and feels everything all at once, he doubts his own purpose to his life considering all the horrible things he has done and feels as though his life has meant nothing.
“Children. You keep them safe.” (191)
Tala reassured Eddie that he keeps children safe and that his reason for living was to keep children safe at Ruby Pier. Although Eddie has been through alot in his life his main purpose was to test the rides at work to make sure he kept children protected. Eddie was finally able to be free after Tala told him that he saved the little girl from the ride that caused his death.
Conclusion:
After much speculation surrounding Eddie and his reason for living after some for the horrible things he has done he is able to find his reason for living and understand forgiveness through each person he met throughout his time in heaven.
